<p><span style="FONT-FAMILY: Palatino">Pavin Chachavalpongpun is currently a Visiting Research Fellow and Lead Researcher for Political and Strategic Affairs of the ASEAN Studies Centre (ASC) of ISEAS. He received his Ph.D. from the School of Oriental and African Studies, Department of Political Studies, University of London, in 2002. Pavin authored the book entitled<i>, A Plastic Nation: The Curse of Thainess in Thai-Burmese Relations</i><b> </b>(2005). His latest work is titled “Temple of Doom: Hysteria about the Preah Vihear Temple in the Thai Nationalist Discourse”, a chapter in the forthcoming book <i>Conflict and Legitimacy Crisis in Thailand</i> (to be released in Winter 2009). Pavin is currently working on a Thailand's foreign policy project, examining the Thaksin Shinawatra period in particular. </span><font face="Times New Roman"> </font></p>
<p><b><span style="FONT-FAMILY: Palatino">Abstract</span></b></p>
<p><span style="FONT-FAMILY: Palatino">The recent exchange of gunfire between the Thai and Cambodian troops along their common border near the contentious Preah Vihear Temple (the second time since the first fatal shootings in October last year) and the bloody clash between members of the anti-government People’s Alliance for Democracy (PAD) and a group of local residents in Si Sa Ket Province in June 2008 at the foot of the temple complex, were seen as the culmination of the relentless stoking of the nationalistic frenzy. This reached a point where reason and good judgment were blatantly put aside. Not for the first time in the Thai history, nationalism was once again exploited, this time by the PAD, to win over its opponents at the expense of a deepening political crisis at home and to the detriment of relations between Thailand and Cambodia. This seminar investigates the litigious Preah Vihear issue from two levels of analysis — local and international politics. At these levels, it is evident that Thai nationalism was aroused by anti-government groups and discursively used as a weapon to undermine the government and to gain public support for anti-government acts through claims of Thai ownership of the temple. </span><font face="Times New Roman"> </font></p>
