Hi Jon,

I explicated Thao Hung Thao Chuang for my undergraduate thesis (1993) 15 years ago under the tutelage of Professor Keyes and Ajarn Douangdeaune Bounyavong at the University of Washington. If you read the entirety of the poem in Lao, it's very beautiful and complex. There are a lot of archaic words which I think should be revived and used in the Laotian lexicon.

I am willing and happy to share with you my research and hope that you and others will continue the research work. Right now, I'm quite swamped with work; however, I'll try to help you with what I can.

Warmest regards,

----------o<font

Dear List Members;

The Thao Hung Thao Cheuang epic (in several languages, Lao, Khmu, Tai Yuan...)
seems like it bears some similarities to Burmese-Mon semi-historical works.

I'm trying to find more information about this epic (or better, family of epics),
but all I can find are summaries and discussions regarding the work's etymology.
The full-blown verse version of the work looks very difficult to read, indeed.
I have a few questions:

1. Is there an accurate and detailed, easy to read prose version of
the Thao Hung Thao Cheuang epic in plain central Thai?

2. Have there been any reviews of the Matichon, two volume version of the epic?
(I saw the two volumes at the Siam Society)

3. I heard a rumour that there might be an English translation
of the epic in the near future.

4. Since my research interests are
pre-modern indigenous political and military history,
does anyone know of any studies of the work in this area?

Thanks,
