Judge in Calif. proceeds with Laos overthrow case

By DON THOMPSON, Associated Press Writer Don Thompson, Associated Press Writer Mon May 11, 7:15 pm ET

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – A federal judge has rejected a request by defense attorneys to dismiss charges against 11 Vietnam War veterans accused of trying to overthrow the government of Laos.

U.S. District Judge Frank C. Damrell Jr. says he is troubled by evidence suggesting that an undercover federal agent told the alleged conspirators the CIA would support a coup attempt.

But Damrell ruled Monday that he does not have enough evidence to dismiss the indictments on misconduct grounds. Former Laotian General Vang Pao, former Army officer Harrison Jack and nine other members of California's Hmong community were arrested in June 2007.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Robert Tice-Raskin told the judge during a hearing in Sacramento that investigators did nothing wrong.
