Thailand (Siam)
One area on which there has been the increasing focus of scholarship since the 1970s is that of the contribution of Siam (renamed Thailand in 1939) to the First World War. Siam declared war on Germany in July 1917 and sent 1,284 soldiers to France. The last surviving soldier, Yod Sungrungruang, was presented with the Legion of Honour by the French Ambassador to Thailand in February 1999. He gained much publicity in the following year after an interview by CNN television was
broadcast. Surprisingly there is no memorial in Christ Church, Bangkok, to the members of the British Community who fought in the war - this is probably the only Anglican Church in Southeast Asia without a plaque of some kind.
