Dear All,

I am happy to announce that the first volume/issue of "Rian Thai: International Journal of Thai Studies" has recently been released. We can see from this first volume a little taste of the exciting new humanities research being undertaken in Thai Studies (esp. literature, religion, and art history).

Dr. Suchitra Chongstitvatana (Director of the Institute of Thai Studies at Chulalongkorn University) is the editor (along with Yoneo Ishii, William Klausner, Pranee Kullavanich, Elizabeth Moore, Peter Skilling, Arthit Thongtak, Supakorn Ditapan, Ritirong Jiwakanon, and Federick Goss).

The cover photograph is by H.R.H. Princess Maha Cakri Sirindhorn.

It is a very handsome journal with nine articles on subjects like:

"Self-Sacrifice of the Kings in the Simhaasana Dvaatrimsikaa and Thai Buddhist Narratives;"

"Anucha: The Younger Brother in Ramakien and Thai Historical Narratives;" "Reconsidering the 'Museum Effect' in Modern Thai Buddhism and Art;"

"Framing the Universe: Cosmography and the 'Discourse on the Frame' in Traiphum Phra Ruang;"

"Dhammakaaya, Tathaagatagarbha and Other-Emptiness: A Comparison between Luang Pho Sot's Thammakai Meditation System and Tibetan Shentong Tradition;"

"Buddha Bless and Dharma Products: A New Trend of Teaching Dharma in Thailand;"

"Khamti Buddhism and Culture: An Observation froma Visit to Khamti Land in Arunachal Pradesh in 2006;"

"The Princess of Saenwi: A Tragic Romance of a Shan Princess;"

"The First Augury Chicken in Tai Myth: Its Relations to Power and Wisdom."

**The volume cost 150 baht (very affordable!) + shipping and can be ordered by contacting the Institute of Thai Studies (www.thaistudy.chula.sc.th).

Thank you,
justin
