SEASSI is an eight-week intensive language training program for undergraduates, graduate students and professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by UW-Madison in 1994-1995 and then since 2000. This coming summer will be the 25th Anniversary of SEASSI. Instruction is offered for academic credit in nine languages at the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year levels.

Vietnamese
 
Scheduling of classes is contingent on sufficient enrollment, especially at the upper levels.

Each language course is equivalent to two semesters of study, with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers of that language.

SEASSI is an integral part of a nationwide network of language teaching faculty from the institutions that are members of the SEASSI Consortium: Arizona State University, Cornell University, Northern Illinois University, Ohio University, University of California-Berkeley, University of California-Los Angeles, University of Hawaii-Manoa, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, University of Michigan, University of Washington, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Yale University. Representatives from these institutions meet annually to discuss SEASSI, and all major decisions regarding the institute must be approved by the SEASSI Board.

Advanced Study of Khmer

The Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Summer Abroad Program is an intensive eight-week training in Khmer language-culture held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The program is administered by the Khmer Language Program at the University of Hawai'i, and in collaboration with the Royal University of Phnom-Penh, Cambodia. This program with one week home-stays in rural of Cambodia provides 3rd year Khmer students with a "one-of-a-kind" opportunity to acquire the linguistic foundation necessary to engage in academic research, professional discourse, and cultural immersion with all segments of Khmer society.

The ASK project will increase the number of linguistically competent Khmer speaking professionals across the United States and internationally. Also the program will promote scholarly cooperation and cultural and socio-economic understanding between Cambodia and the USA. This program is funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays, and Group Projects. 11 Fellowships will be offered for qualified applicants - contingent on funding.

An intensive eight-week course for students with at least intermediate-level study of Thai language (or the equivalent) offered by the Consortium for Advanced Study of Thai in cooperation with the Faculty of Humanities, Chiang Mai University, Chiang Mai, Thailand.

The Advanced Study of Thai program is conducted with assistance from the U.S. Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad Program.  The program is offered contingent on sufficient enrollment and receipt of funding.  AST cooperates with the Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute; applicants are advised to apply to both AST and SEASSI to ensure that they are considered by both admission committees.
