*Singapore** *

The conflict in the Southern Thai provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat
has now entered its sixth year with no sign of an early end to the violence
despite the adoption of new counter-insurgency strategies in 2008. Since
January 2004 the violence has claimed over 3,200 lives and wounded 5,400,
making the Thai insurgency one of Southeast Asia's most serious and
intractable security problems. The conflict poses an on-going threat to
political stability and investor confidence in Thailand.

"Southern Thailand: Anatomy of an Insurgency", a two-day conference to be
held on 10-11 March 2009, is organized by the Institute of Southeast Asian
Studies (ISEAS), Singapore. The primary aim of the conference is to provide
a comprehensive and up to date overview of political violence in Thailand's
southern border provinces. The conference will explore contested "root
causes" of the violence, state responses since 2004, counter-insurgency
methods, the roles of the bureaucracy, media and civil society, regional
perspectives and possible pathways to peace.

ISEAS has brought together leading experts on the insurgency from Thailand,
the United States, Singapore and Australia to provide an in-depth
examination of this multifaceted and complex conflict. The conference will
be invaluable to academics, journalists, security practitioners and
policy-makers from Singapore and around the region. ISEAS expects lively and
substantive discussions during the course of the two-day conference.

Participants to the Conference will be charged a nominal fee of S$100.00 and
will be provided with Conference materials, lunch, and coffee/tea breaks.
Acceptances will be on a first-come-first-served basis.
