Thailand: What is Going On?: An Informal Discussion on the Current Situation in Thailand

Discussion with Dr. Kantathi Suphamongkhon, Senior Fellow at the UCLA Burkle Center.  Dr. Suphamongkhon teaches International Development 191D "Diplomacy, Globalization and Development" and Southeast Asian Studies 188, "Diplomacy under Globalization: Thailand's Experience." In addition to his activities on campus, Dr. Suphamongkhon has spoken to groups in the greater Los Angeles area including the Pacific Council on International Policy and USC's Center for Diplomacy.

Before joining UCLA, Dr. Suphamongkhon was the 39th Foreign Minister in Thailand. He began his public service career in 1984 when he joined the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Thailand and worked at the Department of International Organizations and the Department of Political Affairs. He later served as a Thai diplomat to the United Nations in New York. He has also served as the Thai Trade Representative, which is equivalent to a Trade Minister in the Cabinet, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Prime Minister of Thailand, Foreign Affairs Adviser to the Speaker of Thailand's House of Representative and Chairman of Human Security Network.

Dr. Suphamongkhon received a B.A. in Political Science from UCLA, a M.A. in International Studies from the American University in Washington, D.C. and a Ph.D. in International Relations from USC, where he taught classes on international law, international relations and international organization.

Colloquium with Dr. Suthin Nophaket, Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand.  Dr. Suthin Nophaket, in addition to his position as Commissioner of the National Human Rights Commission of Thailand, is also Founder and Chairman of the Council of Good Governance for Community Development of Thailand, Founder and Chairman of the Institute of Human Rights Protection and Development, Founder and Chairman of the Children and Youths' Rights and Youths' Leadership Development Center, and an Ambassador for Peace, Universal Peace Federation/ IIFWP. 

In his past political career he served as a member of the Thai Parliament in a number of leadership positions, as well as serving as an Advisor to the Deputy Prime Minister (1984-86) and to the Minister of Agriculture and Cooperatives.  In business he was Founder and Chairman of the Institute of Management Development (1980-2001), among other positions. In education he served as Chairman of the Management Department of the National Institute of Development Administration (NIDA), and founded two graduates schools in Dhurakitbundit University and St. John's University.  He received his B.A. from Chulalongkorn University, his MBA from UCLA, his MPA from USC, and his Ph.D. degree from Claremont Graduate University.
