Web announcement here.

Los Angeles Premiere - A film by Rithy Panh, Cambodia/France, 2007. Also known as Le papier ne peut pas envelopper la braise. Screening and discussion with activist and author Somaly Mam.

During the last half-century, Cambodia has witnessed genocide, decades of war and the collapse of social order. The documentary looks at an irreparable tragedy that is less visible, yet no less pervasive: the spiritual death that results when young women are forced into prostitution. The film presents stories of poor Asian women whose lives were violated and their destinies destroyed when their bodies were turned into items of sexual commerce.

The screening with be followed by a discussion featuring Somaly Mam, internationally reknowned activist, author of The Road of Lost Innocence: The True Story of a Cambodian Heroine, and founder of the Somaly Mam Foundation which works to end slavery and the roots of human trafficking.

This film is part of the UCLA International Institute International Human Rights Film Series. Learn more at www.international.ucla.edu/humanrights.
