Thai military denies beating Hmong

Published on March 31, 2009

Thai military on Tuesday rejected an allegation that soldiers beat a Hmong refugee in Phetchabun's Ban Huay Nam Khao.

Chicago-based Hmong Advocate Joe Devy accused the military of beating a Hmong Joua Va Yang during a custody on Saturday night.

Yang was arrested together with his family about 8.30 p.m. on Saturday during his attempt from the shelter.

Colonel Prasitthiphong Moondee, chief of staff of Khao Kho Task Force who oversees the Huay Nam Khao camp said Joua resisted the arrest and slightly injured as he fall down while running away.

"We did not beat him at all but he wounded himself," said the colonel.

Altogether six people in Yang's family including his wife and his teenage children were handed to police in Phetchabun's Khao Kho district, he said.

Police has not yet charged them but detained them pending further instruction from concern authority, he said.

Yang reportedly guided a BBC TV team to Laos to document atrocities committed against the minority group in 2004.

He was among some 5,000 Hmong refugees from Laos who were being sheltered in Ban Huay Nam Kho since late 2004.

The Thai and Lao foreign ministers agreed in a meeting in Luang Prabang last week to repatriate all of them to their places of origin in Laos by the end of this year.
