Call for Papers
Cambodia in World History

Pannasastra University, Phnom Penh
January 5-6, 2009

Teachers Across Borders is circulating a call for a mini-conference on "Cambodia in World History" that will offer Cambodian scholars greater exposure to the field of world history and generate materials for teaching world history at all levels of instruction in Cambodia.

Participants will meet at Pannasastra University in Phnom Penh on January 5, 2009 to engage in discussion, offer presentations and hold pro-seminar or roundtables on world history and Cambodia's place in it, arranged to suit paper submissions-which need at this time be only in the form of a title and a short abstract and submitted ideally by December 1 to facilitate the creation of a conference program. Topics addressed can be comparative (such as monarchy, Buddhism, genocide, constitution-building) or thematic (art, gender, international commerce, colonialism, border issues). The intention to fuel discussion; formal papers can be presented, but also submitted at a later date.

On January 6th, TAB hopes to have a workshop-style meeting with Cambodian teachers addressing methods and materials to instructors at all levels of instruction.

There are thus opportunities for scholars, scholar-teachers, and curriculum designers/lesson plan developers to participate in the meeting. Those interested in the subject but unable to attend are encouraged to submit papers or materials for consideration for future dissemination and publication in WHC or other venues.

Southeast Asian Women in the Diaspora: Troubling Borders in Literature and Art

The literature of Southeast Asian women within the diaspora is marginalized in mainstream cultures. When visible, our writings are often misunderstood as stereotypical representations of purity, pathos, folklore, or matrilineal caricature. As activists, writers, and scholars, we are committed to bringing together a truly unique collection of voices by Southeast Asian women who trace their ancestry to Viet Nam, Cambodia, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Burma/Myanmar, the Philippines, Malaysia, Singapore, Brunei or East Timor, and whose stories have yet to be told or visualized. We would also like to hear from women of minority groups, like the ethnic Chinese and Indians throughout Southeast Asia, and the Mien, Hmong, and Cham, who are located in many regions of the world. As the book’s subtitle suggests, we hope the collection will question the concept of national borders and the boundaries of literature and art.

Because we envision this anthology will feature importantly in classroom curricula, we are looking for pieces that speak to broad themes and concerns relating, but not limited to questions of youth, generational difference, nationality, identity, gender, sexuality, and class. We are soliciting submissions of various genres: short fiction, poems, personal essays, and artwork.

-We accept only writing and artwork by Southeast Asian women as defined in the Call for Submissions (including those women of mixed race).
-We accept works in languages other than English.
-We accept works previously published.
-Word limit for short fiction: 6000 words maximum.
-Number of poems: 5 maximum.
-Word count for personal narrative: 3000 words maximum.
-Artwork specs: digital files are preferred (for preview purposes: good quality jpeg format no wider than 2,025 pixels on the longest side. 300 dpi tiff files will be requested upon acceptance of submitted work.

The deadline for submissions is December 19, 2008.
