Academic Position: History of the Indian Ocean World

The Department of Asian History at Seoul National University invites applications for a tenure track assistant professorship in the history of Indian Ocean World, i.e. South Asian or South East Asian history. Expertise in early modern or modern period will be considered with preference. A secondary field of research and teaching interest in comparative history is desirable. As the successful candidate will be expected to teach not only undergraduate courses but also graduate courses using original sources, he/she should have a good command of relevant native languages.

He/she will be required to teach 9 hours a week in English. The salary is approximately 50,000 U. S. dollars and may vary depending on previous career. PhD degree is required by the time of appointment.

The Department of Political and Social Change is seeking an outstanding scholar to do research on domestic politics in mainland Southeast Asia. While this is primarily a research position, the appointee is expected also to contribute to supervision and teaching of graduate and undergraduate students, and to apply for external research funding. Depending upon the country expertise and teaching interests of the appointee, the appointment may be made jointly with the Faculty of Asian Studies.

The appointee will have a PhD in political science (or closely related discipline), have research experience in and publications on at least one mainland Southeast Asian country, know the language(s) relevant to doing research there, have a research agenda compatible with the Department’s interests, and have a demonstrable interest in comparative politics.

This position is for three years (level A) or four years (level B), although it may be converted into a continuing position (in the case of outstanding performance and subject to the availability of funding). The position can commence as early as practicable to all concerned during 2008 or 2009.
