2008 JOHN A. POPE MEMORIAL LECTURE

Below the Surface: Discovering the Historical Depth of
Thailand's Most Famous Kiln Site

Presented by Dr. Don Hein
Sunday, June 1. 2 PM
Freer Gallery of Art, Meyer Auditorium*

Australian archaeologist Don Hein relates how superficial descriptions of the famed Sawankhalok ceramic production center in northern Thailand delayed recognition of its true significance and complexity until determined archaeological investigation, driven by unsatisfied questions and informed observation, began to reveal its secrets. Through Hein's study of its layers of kilns, Sawankhalok can now be seen to represent a dramatic sequence of changes-from its modest beginning in the thirteenth century, to a paramount position in international export trade, and finally, to its decline.

This lecture celebrates the launch of the museum's first online catalogue, Ceramics in Mainland Southeast Asia: Collections in the Freer Gallery of Art and Arthur M. Sackler Gallery. It also complements the Sackler Gallery exhibition Taking Shape:Ceramics in Southeast Asia.
