Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI)

The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) is an
eight-week (June 16 to August 8 , 2008) intensive language
training program for undergraduates, graduate students and
professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by
UW-Madison in 1995-1995 and then since 2000. This coming
summer will be the 25th Anniversary of SEASSI. Instruction is
offered for academic credit in nine languages at the 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd year levels.

Burmese
Filipino
Hmong
Indonesian
Javanese
Khmer
Lao
Thai
Vietnamese 

Each language course is equivalent to two semesters of study,
with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small
individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a
coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast
Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers
of that language.

Generous financial aid is available.  There are varying
deadlines, the first being February 2, 2008.

Advanced Study of Thai in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Program Orientation: June 21-22, 2008
Program Dates: June 23 -- August 15, 2008

The Advanced Study of Thai Program (AST) is an intensive
eight-week course of instruction in advanced Thai language to
be conducted in Thailand with instruction provided by members
of the faculty of Chiang Mai University (CMU), Chiang Mai,
Thailand. Equivalent to a full year's academic work and
providing benefits far beyond increased foreign-language
proficiency, this overseas program will be offered to
approximately 12 exceptional individuals selected nationally
on the basis of their need for and ability to absorb
additional, advanced training in Thai, their readiness to
benefit from in-country experiences, and their commitment and
potential to become the next generation of Thai language and
area-studies scholars in the U.S. The intensive,
competency-based classroom study is accompanied by guided
exercises outside the classroom setting that closely
approximate real field work. AST is sponsored by the
Consortium for the Advanced Study of Thai.

Advanced Study of Khmer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

The Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) program is funded by the
United States Department of Education, Fulbright-Hays Group
Project Abroad Program and is administered by the College of
Languages, Linguistics, and Literature at the University of
Hawaii. ASK gives participants an opportunity to undergo
intensive immersion language and cultural training in
Cambodia. The Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Program is an
intensive eight-week advanced Khmer language-training program
held in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It aims to fill in a void in the
academic community by providing 3rd year level students a
one-of-a-kind opportunity to acquire the linguistic foundation
necessary to engage in academic research, professional
discourse, and cultural interaction with all segments of
Cambodian society.

Advanced Filipino Abroad in Dasmarinas, Cavite, Philippines

De La Salle University at Dasmarinas
June 13 - August 9, 2008

This program is contingent upon the US Department of
Education, Fulbright-Hays Groups Projects Abroad funding. It
is a highly intensive eight-week program offered to students
with at least intermediate level study of Filipino (Tagalog)
language (or the equivalent). The site of the program will be
at De La Salle - Dasmarinas. Participants will be staying with
selected Filipino families (homestay) for eight weeks in
Dasmarinas, Cavite.  It is supported by the Consortium for the
Advancement of Filipino in cooperation with the De La Salle
University at Dasmarinas.  Applicants must be a university
junior or above, a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.
