The Southeast Asian Studies Summer Institute (SEASSI) is an
eight-week (June 16 to August 8 , 2008) intensive language
training program for undergraduates, graduate students and
professionals. It has been held since 1983 and hosted by
UW-Madison in 1995-1995 and then since 2000. This coming
summer will be the 25th Anniversary of SEASSI. Instruction is
offered for academic credit in nine languages at the 1st, 2nd,
and 3rd year levels.

Burmese
Filipino
Hmong
Indonesian
Javanese
Khmer
Lao
Thai
Vietnamese

Each language course is equivalent to two semesters of study,
with full academic year credit. Instruction is given in small
individualized groups taught by a team consisting of a
coordinator (usually a linguist specializing in Southeast
Asian language pedagogy) and teachers who are native speakers
of that language.

Generous financial aid is available. There are varying
deadlines, the first being February 15, 2008.

Advanced Study of Thai in Chiang Mai, Thailand

Program Orientation: June 21-22, 2008
Program Dates: June 23 -- August 15, 2008
Chiang Mai University

The Advanced Study of Thai Program (AST) is an intensive
eight-week course of instruction in advanced Thai language to
be conducted in Thailand with instruction provided by members
of the faculty of Chiang Mai University (CMU), Chiang Mai,
Thailand. Equivalent to a full year's academic work and
providing benefits far beyond increased foreign-language
proficiency, this overseas program will be offered to
approximately 12 exceptional individuals selected nationally
on the basis of their need for and ability to absorb
additional, advanced training in Thai, their readiness to
benefit from in-country experiences, and their commitment and
potential to become the next generation of Thai language and
area-studies scholars in the U.S. The intensive,
competency-based classroom study is accompanied by guided
exercises outside the classroom setting that closely
approximate real field work. AST is sponsored by the
Consortium for the Advanced Study of Thai.

Advanced Study of Khmer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Royal University of Phnom Penh
Program Dates: June 9 - August 1, 2008

The Advanced Study of Khmer (ASK) Summer Abroad Program is an
intensive eight-week Khmer language-training program held in
Phnom Penh, Cambodia. It aims to fill a void in the US
academic community by providing 3rd-year level Khmer students
with a "one-of-a-kind" opportunity to acquire the linguistic
foundation necessary to engage in academic research,
professional discourse, and cultural immersion with all
segments of Cambodian society.

This program is administered by the College of Languages and
Literature at the University of Hawai’i at Manoa (UHM), and
sponsored by the Royal University of Phnom Penh (RUPP) in
Cambodia. The ASK project will increase the number of
linguistically-competent Khmer speaking professionals
available for employment in federal agencies, departments
responsible for national security, and all non-governmental
agencies. It will promote scholarly cooperation and cultural
and socio-economic understanding between Cambodia and the US.

Application deadline: March 3, 2008

Generous financial aid is available.
