Assistant Professor of Anthropology

Skidmore College invites applications for a tenure-track
position as Assistant or Associate Professor in cultural
anthropology to begin September 2008. We seek a cultural
anthropologist with fieldwork experience in East or Southeast
Asia. The applicant's academic training should be pertinent to
a focus on contemporary social and cultural issues. Topics of
research might include, but are not limited to, urban
anthropology, applied anthropology, environmental and/or
development studies, gender relations, transnational identity
formation, or ethnic conflict. Position requires teaching
introductory and upper division anthropology courses,
including theoretically and area focused topics. The
successful candidate will also possess a demonstrated ability
to contribute to interdisciplinary programs such as Asian
Studies, Law and Society, Women's Studies, or Environmental
Studies.

Applicants must demonstrate excellence in teaching, active
scholarship, and a strong commitment to undergraduate
education at a liberal arts college. Ph.D. required at time of
appointment. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and
experience. Skidmore is on a semester system with a teaching

Visiting Professorship - Buddhism and Contemporary Society
University of British Columbia

The University of British Columbia invites applications for
the Tung Lin Kok Yuen Canada Foundation Visiting Professorship
in Buddhism and Contemporary Society. The Visiting Professor
will teach an undergraduate class on Introduction to Buddhism
at the Department of Asian Studies and will lead a graduate
seminar on Buddhism and Contemporary Society in the Institute
of Asian Research. The successful candidate will teach two
courses during Term 2 (January – June 2008), renewable at the

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Ph.D. in International Studies or
Ph.D. in an appropriate, related discipline, including but not
limited to Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Political
Science, History, Geography, and Women's Studies at time of
appointment. Teaching experience or evidence of strong
potential for effective teaching. Record of, or demonstrable
potential for, successful research and publication. Ability to
communicate effectively with an ethnically and culturally
diverse campus community. Potential for effective
participation in faculty governance.

DESIRED/PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: International Studies is a
dynamic and growing program in an expanding university
committed to taking advantage of its diverse population and
cosmopolitan location to expand its international and global
curricula. The Program seeks a new faculty member interested
in expanding its course offerings. Disciplinary background is
less important than substantive interests, a true commitment
to teaching and an active scholarly agenda focused on global
issues that cross disciplinary boundaries. We have needs
in a variety of areas, including immigration, human rights,
international women's movements, political and economic
development, race and ethnicity, nationalism, and language
policy. We are particularly interested in someone with a
strong background (and experience) in social network analysis,
community economic development, social economy, or other
related areas of social research. Region of expertise is of
secondary importance but experience in Latin America,
Southeast Asia, or the Middle East is of particular interest.
The precise mix of courses to be taught will depend on the
person hired. Successful teaching experience, a record of
successful research and publication, a desire to participate
in the growth of the program, and proficiency in at least one
foreign language are all desirable. While political scientists
are encouraged to apply, please note that this is not a
position in International Relations per se.

DUTIES: Develop and teach courses in international studies at
the lower- and upper-division levels, such as Introduction to
International Studies, Cases in International Social Conflict,
Problems in International Social Conflict, International
Development, and International Women’s Movements, as well as
courses related to the faculty member’s particular scholarly
expertise. Engage in research leading to conference
participation and publication. Perform university and
community service. Advise students.

SALARY RANGE: Commensurate with background and experience.
Probable range from $59,000 to $61,000 depending on
qualifications.

Post-doctoral Fellowships

The National University of Singapore’s Faculty of Arts and
Social Sciences invites applications for up to twenty
Postdoctoral Fellowships (PDF) to be based in various
departments/ programmes and to be affiliated with the 6 newly
set-up Research Clusters namely Global Cities, Cognition and
Behavior, Health, Migration, Religion; Science, Technology and
Society.

The PDF scheme is intended for scholars at the beginning
stages of their academic career. The successful candidate is
generally expected to have completed their doctoral studies
not more than three years prior to the time of application. A
candidate who has satisfied all the requirements for a PhD and
is awaiting the conferment of the degree may also be considered.

The Fellowship will be tenable from August 2008 for a year. It

FULBRIGHT-HAYS DOCTORAL DISSERTATION RESEARCH ABROAD PROGRAM
U.S. DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION

English Teachers in Thailand

Job Location:  Bangkok, Thailand and surrounding regions

Description:  Explore the field of teaching as a either a new
career option or as an opportunity to step right into the
classroom and gain valuable international teaching experience
on your resume immediately.

Five and ten month teaching contracts available in October
2007 and May 2008.  Salary is dependent on education and
experience.  Minimum monthly salary is $600 USD or 20,000 baht
for new teachers and  30,000 baht or $900-$1,000 USD for
experienced teachers (those who have taught English for at
least two years).

Benefits include:  Salaried contract, Pre-departure
assistance, Free accommodations, International medical
insurance, orientation, airport pickup and transport,
in-country support, pre-departure briefing and return airfare
for ten month participants.  Participants travel to Thailand
independently.

Duties:  Teaching assignments are either at primary or
secondary schools in Thailand. Schedule is approximately 20
-30 hours a week, (depending on school) Monday through Friday,
with Thai holidays and weekends free.  Teachers will be
responsible for developing lesson plans under the guidance of
Thai English faculty, classroom management, faculty meetings,
extra-curricular activities and the opportunity to participate
in English camps throughout the semester.
