Comparative Politics/Asia

The Department of Political Science at Colorado College
invites applications for a tenure track appointment at the
Assistant Professor level. The successful candidate will teach
departmental offerings in comparative politics with a focus on
Asia, and teach one of the sections of the introductory course
to the Political Science major. We are open as to approach and
specialization, but the ability as well to teach international
relations or international political economy courses with a
focus on Asia, or to teach comparative politics courses on
both East Asia and South Asia, would be a plus. The crucial
elements that we seek are a candidate's commitment to, and
potential for, excellence in teaching and in scholarly
research. Colorado College is committed to increasing the

has a unique academic system in which professors teach, and
students take, one course at a time. Each block is three and a
half weeks long, with an academic year of eight and a half

Ph.D. should be completed by the starting date of September 1,
2008; if not, the initial appointment will be at the level of

Established by the United States Congress in 1960 to promote
mutual understanding and cooperation among the governments and
peoples of the Asia-Pacific region including the United
States, the East-West Center seeks to foster the development
of an Asia-Pacific community through cooperative study,
training, and research. Center activities focus on the
promotion of shared regional values and the building of
regional agencies and arrangements; the promotion of economic
growth with equity, stability, and sustainability; and the
management and resolution of critical regional as well as
common national-level political, economic, and social
problems. Issues addressed at the Center must have direct
relevance for US-Asia-Pacific understanding and relations.

The Fellow will conduct conceptual and policy-relevant
research relating to critical issues in U.S. economic
relations with the countries of Asia and the Pacific. Priority
interests are economic integration (including trade, finance,
and labor flows) and the macroeconomic development of Asia and
implications for the United States. A Senior Fellow will have
an established research agenda, provide intellectual
leadership and direction for junior colleagues and maintain
high standards of individual scholarship.

Candidates must have a demonstrated capacity in analytical and
policy-relevant research in an area of economics that is
either complementary to the above areas or expands the scope
of the program. The successful candidate must have a Ph.D. or
equivalent in a relevant discipline; and good communication
skills in the English language demonstrating the ability to
communicate results and recommendations in a clear and concise
manner to academic as well as informed policy, public, and
private-sector audiences. Candidates who wish to be considered
for a position at Levels 12 through 15 must demonstrate a
strong publications record; a record of developing and
successfully managing collaborative projects that address
important political, governance, and security challenges in
the region; and a record of success in obtaining funding for
research projects. To be considered for a Level 14 or 15
position, candidates must also demonstrate a record of
displaying professional leadership with colleagues and peers
and a willingness and ability to assume a leadership position
within the program.

Desired qualifications include experience with academic,
research, and policy communities in the Asia Pacific region;
demonstrated experience in publication, workshop organization,
proposal development and implementation; and fluency in an
Asia-Pacific language.

Initial appointment would be for a period of three years.
Compensation includes an annual salary range from $58,717 to
$116,328 (including a cost-of-living allowance currently at
25%, but subject to change) commensurate with qualifications
and experience and an attractive benefits package.
