Volker Grabowsky, Bevölkerung und Staat in Lan Na: Ein Beitrag
zur Bevölkerungsgeschichte Südostasiens (Population and State
in Lan Na: A Contribution to the population history of
Southeast Asia). Wiesbaden: Harrassowitz Verlag, 2004.
ISBN: 3–447–05111–6, Price: 62 Euro

Large parts of Southeast Asia still seemed to be a “land
without peoples” to European travellers at the end of the
nineteenth century. In pre-colonial Indianised Southeast Asia
the control of manpower, not the shortage of land, was the
crucial factor for establishing, consolidating and
strengthening state power. Traditional warfare was determined
by using forced mass resettlements to solve the problems of
chronic shortages of population. The following study takes the
region of Lan Na in today’s North Thailand as an example to
show the influences of demographic factors on political,
social and economic process. For the first time extensive
northern Thai sources have been evaluated systematically to
reconstruct the population history of this region located in
the heartland of Mainland Southeast Asia.
