NEW FACULTY POSITION AT UCLA
SOUTHEAST ASIAN HUMANITIES

The Department of Asian Languages & Cultures at UCLA seeks
applications for a tenure track position in Southeast Asian
humanities at the rank of Assistant Professor, to begin July
1, 2007. The search is open to any discipline in the
humanities, including but not limited to literature,
linguistics, popular culture/film studies, gender studies,
religious studies, cultural anthropology, and urban studies.
Candidates should be actively engaged in research with a focus
on one or more Southeast Asian countries, speak at least one
Southeast Asian language, and show a strong publication record
or the potential to develop one. The Ph.D. is required. The
successful candidate will be expected to participate in the
activities of UCLA’s Center for Southeast Asian Studies, to
teach undergraduate and graduate courses in the Department of
Asian Languages and Cultures and to assist in the
administration of the Department’s Southeast Asian Languages
program. Salary is commensurate with education and experience.

SOUTHEAST ASIAN STUDIES PROGRAMME
NATIONAL UNIVERSITY OF SINGAPORE

The Southeast Asian Studies Programme of the Faculty of Arts
and Social
Sciences, National University of Singapore, seeks applications
from scholars
specializing in contemporary mainland Southeast Asia (in
particular Vietnam,
Laos, Cambodia or Myanmar) at the Assistant Professor or
Associate Professor
(tenure track) level.  Disciplinary specialization is open but
preference
will be shown to those who engage in research on contemporary
social issues.
Applicants must be committed to working and teaching in an
interdisciplinary
environment with an area studies perspective. Candidates
should have
relevant teaching experience, should be actively engaged in
research, be
fluent in at least one mainland Southeast Asian language, and
show evidence
of a strong publication record, or the potential to develop one.

In terms of teaching responsibilities, the successful
applicant will be
expected to teach at both the undergraduate and postgraduate
levels.

Assistant Professor - Archaeology of Southeast or East Asia
Department of Anthropology, University of Washington

UNIVERSITY OF WASHINGTON (Seattle) seeks a Ph.D.
archaeologist. The appointment will be at the level of
tenure-track Assistant Professor, and will begin September
2007. The successful candidate will have an active field
program in the archaeology of Southeast or East Asia (mainland
preferred); interests and expertise in environmental
archaeology; demonstrated success in securing extramural
support; close familiarity with current theoretical issues; a

South, Southeast, and West Asia Outreach Coordinator
Center for Asian Studies, University of Colorado - Boulder
 
The South, Southeast, and West Asia Outreach Coordinator is a
12-month, fulltime position at the new National Resource
Center for Asian Studies at the University of Colorado - Boulder.
 
The Outreach Coordinator will be responsible for the
coordination, design, and delivery of community and K-12
programs and events, including teacher workshops, community
talks, and an outreach website and resources.
 
Preferred Qualifications:
MA in Asian languages and cultures. Demonstrated knowledge of
at least one Asian language and significant experience living
or studying in South, Southeast, or West Asia.
Strong oral and written communication, research, and computer
skills. Budget management and supervisory experience preferred.
Experience in program design and presentation.
K-12 teaching experience.

Weatherhead East Asian Institute 2007-2008 Postdoctoral
Fellowship in Modern Southeast Asian Studies
 
The Weatherhead East Asian Institute of Columbia University
invites applications for its 2007-2008 Postdoctoral Fellowship
in Modern Southeast Asian Studies. Candidates from all social
science disciplines, including history, are welcome to apply.
The fellowship will cover a 10 or 12-month period beginning
July 1, 2007 or September 1, 2007. The Fellow will devote half
time to his or her own research and will teach one
graduate-level course on Southeast Asia per semester. The
stipend for 2007-2008 is $42,000, plus benefits.

Eligibility: Applicants must have completed all Ph.D. degree
requirements (completed and filed the dissertation) between
July 2003 and July 2007. Applicants must have completed their
Ph.D. in a social science discipline, including history,
working on modern Southeast Asia. Applications from
individuals who hold or have held regular faculty positions
will not be considered.

Student conference for Southeast Asian Studies
Northern Illinois University

Dear Colleagues,
 
I am writing to announce the student conference for Southeast
Asian Studies at Northern Illinois University on February 17,
2007.
 
The topic of the conference this year will be “Southeast Asia:
Crossroads of the World.”
 
We invite students interested in Southeast Asia from all
disciplines to submit abstracts of papers for the event.
Please send abstracts to seaclubniu at yahoo.com under the
subject heading “Student Conference Submission.” The deadline
for abstract submission is December 1, 2006. If the abstract
is accepted, you will be required to submit the completed
paper by January 16, 2007.
 
Professor Mohamad Abu Bakar will be our keynote speaker.
Professor Dato' Mohamad is the current Tun Abdul Razak
Professor at Ohio University. 

Information from the Tun Abdul Razak chair website on Prof.
Dato' Mohamad:  “He holds a bachelor's degree from the
University of Malaya and a master's degree from the University
of Lancaster.  He also studied at the London School of
Economics and earned a certificate in public administration
from the European Institute of Public Administration in the
Netherlands.  His areas of research include Malay politics and
foreign policy, contemporary Islam and globalization.  He has
been a faculty member administrator at the University of
Malaya for more than thirty years. He was a Fulbright Visiting
Scholar at the University of Washington in Seattle; Visiting
Professor at La Plata National University in Buenos Aires,
Argentina; Visiting Fellow at the Oxford Center for Islamic
Studies in England; and Lecturer in Malaysian Studies at the
University of Cairo, Egypt.  In Malaysia he has been a
lecturer with the Armed Forces Staff College, the Defense
College, and the National Institute of Public Administration.” 
 
A limited amount of funds will be available in the form of
travel grants for conference attendees. Please indicate
whether you would like to be considered for a travel grant
when you submit an abstract.
