Mekong Ethnic Media Center Planning Workshop
Chiang Mai University
Chiang Mai, Thailand
July 6-7, 2006

The workshop will bring together ethnic activists and
officials with
international scholars and experts to begin planning a pan-ethnic,
multi-lingual media resource center. The center will serve the
needs
of ethnic minorities on the Chinese and Burmese sides of the
trans-Mekong region. It will include an archive for
ethnic-language
materials (texts, recordings, videos, etc), and multi-media
resources
for the creation of new materials.

The workshop will take place from July 6-7, 2006 with a
diverse group
of about 40-50 participants. On the first day, ethnic participants
will present their current work on language and cultural
rights, and
international experts will introduce pragmatic skills (data
collection, fundraising, archiving) necessary for the
establishment of
the cultural center. On the second day, working groups will
begin to
draw up action plans. Registration is limited. For registration
information, contact workshop organizer Sara (Meg) Davis at
Mekongmedia at gmail.com.

The workshop is a project of Asia Action, a new NGO that links
up NGOs
in China and Burma with international resources and supporters
that
can help them to do their work. It is made possible with
support from
Open Society Institute.
