Council on Thai Studies 2006 - Call for Papers

The Council on Thai Studies will hold its annual meeting at
the University of Wisconsin-Madison, October 22, 2006 in
conjunction with the annual meeting of the Midwest Conference
on Asian Affairs (October 20-22) (as was done at Northern
Illinois University in 1997). In other words, COTS sessions on
the 22nd will be co-coded as MCAA/COTS presentations.

COTS is an informal organization of scholars interested in all
aspects of Thai studies. COTS provides scholars with a venue
for reporting preliminary findings; opportunities to receive
prepublication feedback; and a forum to discuss field and
archive challenges. Please consider giving a paper and/or
organizing a small group for a roundtable discussion or panel.
Graduate students are also encouraged to submit proposals.

All proposals are due September 6, 2006.

Individual topics and/or groupings of papers may be submitted.
An effort will be made to group individual papers into panel
sessions around a common theme, issue, methodology, or
discipline. Each person will have a maximum of twenty minutes
for an oral presentation and should be prepared to field
questions after his/her talk. As the agendas of COTS meetings
have grown over the years, we aim to adhere to these time
limits. Scholars may distribute written copies of their papers.

Acceptance of paper proposals, information regarding
scheduling of panels, and assignment of panel moderators and
discussants will be sent in September by e-mail to those who
submit proposals as well as to those who indicate their
intention to attend.

Membership in COTS is free and there is no registration fee
for the meeting. On the other hand, if you intend to attend
MCAA on Oct. 20 or 21, you will need to register for MCAA itself.

The Madison Concourse Hotel is the venue for COTS and MCAA.
Please see the MCAA 2006 site for information on the hotel,
directions to Madison, MCAA registration, etc.

http://seasia.wisc.edu/mcaa/index.htm

Please be aware that rooms have been reserved at the Concourse
Hotel and at the Lowell Center on campus for MCAA, though not
for COTS as such. In addition, as noted at the MCAA site, the
annual Conference on South Asia is being held concurrently at
the same time and place (Oct. 19-22) and is featuring Sri
Lanka as its theme this year in recognition of the tenth
anniversary of the American Institute for Sri Lankan Studies.

If you need more information about COTS, please do not
hesitate to contact Larry Ashmun (COTS 2006 Chair) at
lashmun at library.wisc.edu.

www.laostudies.org San Francisco, CA are pleased to announce
the Second International Conference on Lao Studies (ICLS) to
be held on Thursday-Sunday, May 3-6, 2007 in Tempe, Arizona,
USA. The main objective of this conference is to promote Lao
studies by providing an international forum for scholars to
present and discuss various aspects of Lao studies.

Rationale: The Lao PDR today has a population of roughly five
million people, comprising an amazing complex of
ethnolinguistic groups. Moreover, the number of people in the
Lao diaspora numbers as many as twenty-five million. In recent
years there has been increased interest in Laos and its
peoples as subjects of serious research and discussion by
scholars and the interested public alike. Scholarly
publications on topics pertaining to Laos have flourished in
the last several decades and the international media have
helped to cultivate interest in the region.

Program: The program will include invited speakers, paper
presentations, panel presentations, exhibits, performances,
and cultural activities.

The 2007 conference will feature presentations on any topic
concerning Lao Studies. Topics include all ethnolinguistic
groups of Laos (e.g. Mon-Khmer, Hmong-Mien, Tibeto-Burman,
Lao-Tai), the Isan Lao and other Lao (Tai) groups in Thailand,
cross-border ethnic groups in neighboring countries, and
overseas diaspora heritage groups. We welcome both proposals
for panels and abstracts for individual papers on a wide range
of interests including but not limited to history, politics,
development and planning, environment, classical literatures,
linguistics, music, sports, science, health, religion and
ritual, ethnic groups, media and art history, and women and
society.

The languages to be used in the conference will be English,
French and Lao.

To present a paper at the conference, abstracts must be
submitted by the following deadlines.

December 15, 2006 is the deadline for panel proposals. For
panel proposals, please provide the title of the panel and a
brief paragraph describing its goal/rational, participants’
names, affiliations and e-mail address, the titles of their
presentations and a paragraph-long abstract for each presentation.

January 5, 2007 is the deadline for individual paper
abstracts. For individual papers please provide no longer than
a one page abstract with the title of abstract, author
name(s), author affiliation and e-mail address, and content.

Call for Papers - 41st Annual Conference of Asian Studies on
the Pacific Coast
Hosted by the East-West Center, and the University of Hawai’i
June 15-17, 2007
http://mcel.pacificu.edu/aspac/aspac2007/

Topic: Looking at Asia: Changes, Continuities and Consequences

Changes in Asia appear to be occurring at an ever-accelerating
pace: shifts in political and economic power, the
globalization and mediation of culture, redefinitions of
identity, and the increasing numbers of diasporic and
sojourning populations are notable examples. At the same time
continuities, both independent and in reaction to change, are
part of Asia's lived experience. Our gaze upon Asia has also
changed; it has become more diverse. The greater
representation of indigenous, heritage, and minority voices in
our field is notable. There are also an increasing number of
practitioners, culture workers and "applied" colleagues coming
to the table.

The 2007 ASPAC Conference in Honolulu offers a singular
opportunity and a unique space to look at Asia in terms of
continuity and change, and to consider their cultural,
political, economic, religious and historical consequences.
Embracing Hawaii's tradition of aloha, the Conference becomes
a setting in which to reflect about our field, to network with
colleagues, and to re-connect with friends. ASPAC welcomes
submissions in all areas of Asian Studies.

All presenters must preregister for ASPAC 2007 before their
proposal will be considered. If the proposal is not accepted
the conference fee will be promptly refunded upon request.
Please review the Guidelines page for information on
expectations of presenters and moderators. Presenters are
encouraged to consider publishing their work in the ASPAC
online journals E-ASPAC and ASPAC PAPERS.

The deadline for all proposals is May 15, 2007. To submit a
proposal please see the website at
http://mcel.pacificu.edu/aspac/aspac2007/.

Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC), Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia
http://www.icassecretariat.org/icas5/

overlooking the KLCC Park and the landmark PETRONAS Twin
Towers. The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre also enjoys a
prestigious location alongside extensive public transport and
a wide range of hotels.

The Call for Papers is now open. Please do consider joining us

opportunity for networking with scholars and sharing in the

Theme: “Sharing a Future in Asia” is the overarching theme of
ICAS 5. Asia is often proclaimed as the fastest growing region
in the world today. This is in spite of the fact that nearly a
billion of its population is still living in poverty. It is
Asia’s resilience in the face of extreme adversities and its
ability to rise above and overcome the challenge of
dividedness and differences that has enhanced the global
perception that it is a region of hope and prosperity for
everyone, both from inside and outside Asia, to participate
and share. Thus ICAS 5 Kuala Lumpur provides a timely
opportunity to examine and elaborate critically this possibility.

Panels at ICAS 5 are categorised into the following
Sub-Themes/Disciplines:

Arts, Culture and Heritage
Development and Urbanization
Documentation, Resource Management and Technology
Economy, Business and Law
Environment and Energy
History
Knowledge and Philosophy
