In addition to screening, each patient will receive counseling on dietary, lifestyle practices, and risk factors associated with heart disease and stroke, which our MAPS undergrads will be providing. The goal of this program is to catch patients who are at high risk for stroke and also to educate and inform patients on how to modify, treat, or control risk factors to improve heart health and to prevent heart disease, diabetes, and stroke. While this fact in itself is alarming and cause for action, even more disturbing is the fact that African Americans have 2x higher risk for having a first stroke compared to non-Hispanic whites, and the prevalence of high blood pressure among African Americans in the U.S. is the highest in the WORLD. In addition, African Americans aged 35-54 have 4X the relative risk for stroke compared to any other group.
