<p style="margin:0in;margin-bottom:.0001pt;text-align:justify"><span style="font-family:"Georgia","serif";color:black">My paper is part of research I am undertaking towards a book entitled "Madness and the Sea in the American Imagination." The book, and my
paper, looks at how positive notions of the sea entered Western imagination thanks to the existence of ancient medical discourses in the Hippocratic tradition which argued for the sea's therapeutic properties, helpful in particular in the treatment of forms
of mental illness or "melancholia." I trace the impact of this positive, therapeutic perception of the sea on the work, thought and experience of a range of philosophers and poets in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, including the two figures I focus
