Late notice indeed, since I told my students I would accept their take-home finals until Thursday morning. Ummm.

If their reason for this request/new rule (?) is "We have a small
window to drop non-passing students in order
to free up seats for spring quarter."

then I would suggest the following:

On the 19th, we could tell them our fails, even if we couldn't quite tell them our complete
grades for Winter quarter.

Some of us may not know, on Friday, precisely what grades every student will get. But we will know, probably already do know, most of our failing students. The plagiarist you caught 3 weeks ago, the kid who hasn't shown up for 3 weeks, the kid going into the final with three failing papers.... Perhaps in some cases the final is a make or break factor, but in most cases the final is pretty consistent with the rest of the quarter's work and only raises or lowers the average a little bit. In addition, you could grade the marginal students' finals first, to be sure.

This compromise meets their need for information while freeing those of us who were planning to finish up next weekend.

All this being said, I intend to finish by Friday.

Kate Watt
