These kids are having problems getting any of the classes they need. Now maybe they are being picky, maybe they don't want to get up early. But I'm not hearing that from my 1As. I'm hearing they can't get classes. If they can't get enough units there goes much of their financial aid. If they are not registered with full-time units, what does that do to their dorm contracts? <div><br><div>Never mind the bait-and-switch that's being pulled on the Fall 4s. </div><div><br><div>How many students are really affected? Who knows? But if the 100 who signed Gray's student's petition are having difficulties, I'd say that's 100 too many.</div><div><br></div><div>But if we <i>are</i> discussing the 1Bs, why are more 1Bs being offered in Spring than in Winter? I think there is something wrong with a program creating a series that builds on skills from the previous class and then does not schedule enough classes the following quarter to allow the majority of students to use those skills while they are freshest in the students' minds. Using my own bad relationship with math as an example, I know that I would be doomed if I had to retain any knowledge from Fall to use in the Spring. Many of our students have similar troubles with writing. </div><div><br></div><div>Let's also consider the honors students and the athletes -- all these get front-of-the-line privileges. In good times, such a privilege would be relatively benign. It might have meant that kids who were not in those programs would have had to take an 8am class rather than a 1pm one. Now? Now it creates a tiered system that punishes the students who didn't have the knowledgeable high school counselor or who didn't make the baseball team. </div><div><br></div><div>Anyway, I'm not sure some students wouldn't benefit from a gap in their college experience. <br><br>What I'm hearing now is that, while there won't be enough 1Bs in winter, there will be enough in spring for everyone who needs it. <br><br>This quarter (and next, I suppose) may well be slim pickings for our freshmen, but they don't actually have to drop out and go home. (And, given their leases, they would probably not be better off for doing so.)<br>
<br>While I applaud the engagement of those students writing letters and talking to the Chancellor, and I agree that the situation is very tough and unpleasant (for them and for us), dropping out is no one's best answer.<br>
