For 30 plus years Kronos’ fearless exploration of sound from the exotic
to the esoteric has redefined the string quartet canon and the future of
chamber music. In the process, <b>David Harrington</b>,
<b>John Sherba</b> (violins), <b>Hank Dutt</b> (viola) and <b>Jeffrey
Zeigler</b> (cello), have become world renowned for their extraordinary
creativity and collaborations with many of the world's most eclectic
composers and performers. Their expansive repertoire incorporates wide
ranging genres including 20th century masters, contemporary
composers and world music sounds. They have performed thousands of
sold-out concerts from Sydney to Shanghai, and released more than 40
recordings of extraordinary breadth and creativity. Kronos' work has also
garnered numerous awards, including a Grammy for Best Chamber Music
Performance (2004) and "Musicians of the Year" (2003) from
Musical America.<br>

<b>TAIKOPROJECT</b> presents North America’s premier taiko drummers in a
heart-pounding, state-of-the-art theatrical production called
<b><i>(re)generation</i></b>. This large-scale performance takes taiko
into the 21st century with edgy, contemporary elements like
jazz, hip-hop, video, choreography, and spoken-word for a fast and
furious display of Japanese drumming. Since its founding in 2000, this
energetic ensemble has championed the evolution of western taiko from
Dallas to Dubai, collaborated with Kanye West and changed taiko history
by becoming the first American group to participate and win top prize at
the 4th Annual Tokyo International Taiko Contest. Most
memorably, the group dazzled millions watching the 81st
Academy Awards with their collaborative musical performance celebrating
the Oscar nominees for Best Score. <br><br>

inkBoat</b>, the über-creative performance company founded by
international butoh star <b>Shinichi Momo Iova-Koga</b>, uses traditional
and experimental dance forms weaved with physical theater and Japanese
Butoh Dance. The fusion results in work that is conceptually bold,
controversial and universal in expression. Butoh, or “dance step,”
emerged from the ashes of postwar Japan with a dark aesthetic that
involves playful, grotesque imagery, taboo topics and extreme or absurd
environments. It is traditionally performed in white-body makeup with
slow hyper-controlled motion. <b><i>Milk Traces,</i></b> is a deeply
thoughtful and ghostly work that showcases astonishing acts of
self-puppetry. Through butoh, Iova-Koga transforms beautiful stage
pictures into absorbing examinations of the soul. <br><br>

</i>The enterprising <b>Calder Quartet</b> <b>Benjamin Jacobson</b>,
<b>Andrew Bulbrook</b> (violins), <b>Jonathan Moerschel</b> (viola), and
<b>Eric Byers</b> (cello) boasts a sound that is “big, bold, firm, and
clean,” (Los Angeles Times) just like the towering mobiles Alexander
Calder made famous. The quartet takes on another 20th century
master Béla Bartók and his six quartets which are thought to be the most
important works since Beethoven’s. Composed over the course
of thirty years, these works embrace both eastern European folk music and
the western classical tradition, while revolutionizing the expressive
possibilities of the string quartet. Heard altogether, they present a
compelling portrait of a visionary composer. <br><br>

</i>PARADIGM</b> is a company that wears its age proudly. Composed
of modern dance luminaries all over age 60, their engaging repertoire of
commissioned works for seasoned, professional dancers, serves to remind
that dance’s domain is not limited to the young. Founded by veteran
dancers <b>Gus Solomons Jr.</b>, <b>Carmen deLavallade</b>, and <b>Dudley
Williams</b>, PARADIGM’S artists have illuminated works by Lester Horton,
Alvin Ailey, the Metropolitan Opera Ballet, Dance Theatre of Harlem,
Martha Graham, and Merce Cunningham, to name a few. The most aptly named
company around, PARADIGM vividly illustrates the eloquence that years of
experience brings to dance expression<br><br>
