The process of knowing is so complex that philosophers tend to
treat it reductively, as if it were a clear and distinct act, however
grounded inexperience and understanding. Theatre can be used as a model
of the authentic act of knowing, in that successive events (experiences)
alter our understanding of a chain of causality. In drama, each step
brings reversals in distinctions between opposites such as right and
wrong, true and false, and good and evil. The superimposition of
phsychological states, the continuous attempt to overcome points of view,
and conflicting modes of logical reasoning are theatrical elements which
can shed light on human cognitive dynamics. Shakespeare's "Measure
for Measure," Kleist's "Puppet Theatre," and visual models
of theories in physics will serve as examples.
