Professor of English at UC Irvine. He is the author of _Reading the
Global: Troubling Perspectives on Britain's Empire in Asia_ (Columbia
U.P., 2007). In this book he analyzes 18th and 19th century literary
texts to show how 'the global' was instituted as a peculiar
perspective in the context of British imperial expansion in Asia. He has
also published essays in a number of venues, including NOVEL, Boundary 2,
Representations, and New Literary History.<br>
