TO: TAs and Lecturers,

Please consider joining the Inland Area
Writing Project's High-School Outreach Program, which reaches thousands
of college-bound high-school juniors each year. By evaluating and
presenting the results of students' sample placement exams, you can help
UCR's feeder schools (teachers, students, and administrators) understand
our expectations for freshman writers. The visitation program
is one of our most important activities because it raises
expectations for writing in the schools, and reaches students when they
have a year to prepare for the UC and CSU placement tests.
Consultants attend an orientation and receive $200 for each classroom
visit. (Multiple visits can be bundled into one day.)
Now in its fifteenth year, the HSOP has worked with almost 50,000 local
students.

Thanks for your consideration of this
opportunity. Contact numbers are below.

Subject: [Ucrcompteachers] Job Opportunity for TAs and Lecturers:
High School Outreach Program

Dear Colleagues:

The High School Outreach Program is currently seeking instructors to
join its team of consultants to help local high schools prepare their
students for the Analytical Writing Placement Exam (the exam formerly
known as the Subject A) required of all UC applicants.

For those unfamiliar with the program, here is how it works. Practice
exams will be sent to high schools to administer to their students, and
these exams will be graded analytically by qualified instructors from
the UCR English Department. In addition to the analytical grading of
these exams, instructors serve as consultants, visiting particular
high school classrooms and giving presentations on how students can
better prepare themselves as readers and writers who will be required to
demonstrate the academic skills needed for the official Analytical
Writing Placement Exam.

Consultants will grade no more than 35 papers for a single class, for
which they will give a presentation for a single class period (one hour).

Consultants will be paid $200 per visit, which is meant to cover time
spent grading, time for traveling, gas money, and the actual visitation
time. So, the simple math of this is that if you were to choose to do
five visits, you would be richer by $1000.

Priority will be given to consultants who have served in the program
in previous years. The ideal applicant is one who has experience with the
E.T.S. grading of the official Analytical Writing Placement Exam through
E.T.S or Pearson Testing Services at Berkeley.

We do though encourage applications from TAs and lecturers, who
may not have been at Berkeley but do have years of experience in our
Basic Writing Program.

Prior to high school visitations, consultants will need to attend an
orientation and norming session.

Please send an email professing your interest to be a consultant to
Dean Papas at:
dpapasucr@hotmail.com. Please
list “High School Outreach” as the subject of your email.

I look forward to working with you,
