<b>LI ZHENSHENG: Red-color News Soldier</b> is the first in-depth visual
testament to the brutality and mass chaos that swept through China during
the Cultural Revolution from 1966 to 1976. This is the first and perhaps
the only American showing of LI's historically significant archive of
photographs, a unique archive that was hidden for over 30 years. LI’s
employment at the Heilongjiang Daily, a newspaper turned-propaganda
machine during the revolution, and his decision to wear a red arm-band
showing an alliance with Chairman Mao Zedong allowed him rare access to
scenes which have since been only described in written and verbal
accounts. "Red-Color News Soldier" is the literal translation
of the Chinese characters printed on the armband given to LI in Beijing
at the end of 1966, eight months after the launch of the Great
Proletarian Cultural Revolution. <br><br>
<b>FEAST: Christy Johnson and 33 Confessors</b> - Christy Johnson's Feast
project divests photographs of First Communicants of their symbolic value
and locates them in a discursive site within a book. In the case of the
installation in the Oculorium Gallery the subjects have been enlarged
into iconic representations, and they there perform the roles both of
guardian and witness to the artist's book. By combining this archive of
commemorative images with one of texts shaped by interviews with
invisible communicants, the artist invents a fictive location for
experience and memory. <br><br>
<b>NO MORE HEROES</b> - No More Heroes explores the phenomenon of iconic
sports heroes—how they materialize in society and the qualities they
embody that are revered. The exhibition presents traditional images of
sporting activities and stars drawn from UCR/CMP's Keystone-Mast and Will
Connell collections that include Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Jack Dempsey, and
Amelia Erhardt, juxtaposed with newspaper articles from the past 30 years
pasted floor-to-ceiling on the gallery walls. <br><br>

<b>Artist Talk: Conversation with LI Zhensheng and Robert Pledge</b><br>
Join renowned photographer LI Zhensheng and curator Robert Pledge,
president and co-founder of Contact Press Images, for a discussion of the
evolution and historical significance of "Red-Color News
Soldier." In the late 1960s and early 1970s, rioting students around
the world were inspired by the finger-pointing, slogan-shouting style of
the Red Guards. Even today, all the chaos of that period can seem
somewhat romantic and idealistic in comparison with the contemporary
Chinese society. With this in mind, it was necessary to produce a clearer
and more truthful image of the violent turmoil that turned China upside
down during the Cultural Revolution. LI Zhensheng was the one person who,
through his exceptional photographic legacy, could convey an authentic
vision of this tragic period. <br><br>

<b>Christy Johnson Tour and Book Signing</b><br>
Join London-based artist Christy Johnson for a tour of her exhibition
Feast: Christy Johnson and 33 Confessors, an intense layered work
comprising three distinct components. Christy Johnson will also be
launching and signing her new book, Feast: Christy Johnson and 33
Confessors, which juxtaposes first-hand testimony from thirty-three
female First Communicants, aged between 8 and 80, with the anonymous
‘found' black and white photographs. Copies of the book will be available
for purchase. <br><br>

<b>HARDSOFT: Youth Video From Riverside<br>
Arts Walk</b> <br>
“HardSoft: Youth Video from Riverside” features computer produced digital
stories; autobiographical narratives made simply from photographs and
voice-record audio. These touching and at times haunting video works were
made during the past year by Riverside youth taking part in workshops
organized by the Riverside Arts Council. The teens in the Arlanza
workshop were recruited through Project BRIDGE, a gang intervention and
suppression program. The middle school students at Auburndale
Intermediate were members of “Opportunity Club,” a classroom for youth at
risk of expulsion due to disruptive behavior, yet given another chance.
There are also several digital stories made by students who didn't
participate in the original workshops, but wanted to have their stories
told. Each student was encouraged to discuss his or her life, from birth
through high school, mixing recollections, regrets, and hopes.<br><br>

Classes exploring digital photography, video and audio. Participants will

are held M-Th, 1-3PM (18yrs & over) and 4-6pm (12-18yrs). Some
scholarships are available and classes are limited to 12 students per

the Pedestrian Mall in downtown Riverside, California. Regular Gallery
and Museum Store hours are Tuesday through Saturday, 12 PM to 5 PM.
Admission is $3 for the general public and free to members, students and
seniors. Children 12 and under must be accompanied by an adult. UCR/CMP
offers guided educational tours to groups of 10 or more. Guided tours
must be scheduled in advance and are appropriate for adults and grades
7-12; a nominal scheduling fee of $20 is charged. Waiver of the fee will

The University of California, Riverside, has recently united its three
downtown arts presentation venues under the umbrella name of the
UCR/ARTSblock. The ARTSblock is composed of the UCR/California Museum of
Photography, The Sweeney Art Gallery, and the future (2008) Culver Center
for the Arts, a media lab and presentation facility. The three
institutions reside side by side in the heart of downtown Riverside's
historic Pedestrian Mall.<br><br>
