</font>Joe Childers</b> specializes in Marxist, post-Marxist, and
historicist theory and criticism; the English novel; and Victorian
studies, with recent focus on working-class and immigrant literature. He
is the author of <i>Novel Possibilities: Fiction and the Formation of
Early Victorian Culture</i> (University of Pennsylvania Press, 1995) and
coauthor of <i>The Columbia Dictionary of Modern Literary and Cultural
Criticism</i> (Columbia University Press, 1995). He has published
articles and essays on a wide variety of topics, including Edwin Chadwick
and the discursive formation of the Victorian working classes, class
resistance and Victorian domesticity, and theorizing the imperialized
subject in the metropolis. Some of his recent work includes, “Foreign
Matter” in <i>Filth</i>, edited by William Cohen and Ryan Johnson
(Minnesota, 2005), "Outside Looking In: Colonial, Immigrants, and
the Pleasure of the Archive" in <i>Victorian Studies</i> (2004) and
“Political Dickens,” an essay on Dickens’s journalism in <i>Palgrave
Advances in Charles Dickens Studies</i> (2006). He is the coeditor
of two forthcoming collections, <i>Victorian Prism: Refractions of the
Crystal Palace</i> and <i>Sublime Economies: Aesthetics, Economics, and
Value.<br><br>
