The Inland Empire's Literary Legacy is Celebrated in an Anthology Called
"Inlandia" <br>
The publication of a new anthology triggers events in downtown Riverside
Saturday, Dec. 9 and at UCR Palm Desert on Tuesday, Dec. 12<br><br>

PALM DESERT, Calif.
(<a href="http://www.palmdesert.ucr.edu/" eudora="autourl">
www.palmdesert.ucr.edu</a>) -– “Inlandia: A Literary Journey Through
California’s Inland Empire,” the first literary anthology to represent
the inland region of Southern California, will be celebrated with a
program of readings from the book at UCR Palm Desert on Tuesday, Dec. 12
at 7 p.m. The program is the second in the Gneiss Poetry Series.

There will also be an all-day “Inlandia Festival,” with book signings and
readings, musical performances, ethnic food booths, and a display of
historic photographs of the region, in Riverside on Saturday, Dec. 9 at
the Riverside Public Library. <br><br>
“Inlandia” was published to showcase how the rich and culturally diverse
region of Riverside and San Bernardino counties, dismissively known for
years to the outside world as the area “east of Los Angeles,” has been
represented in literature. <br><br>
The anthology includes works by distinguished members of the literary
world, such as Joan Didion, Norman Mailer, Eric Schlosser, M.F.K. Fisher,
Joan Baez, Susan Straight and Sholeh Wolpe, as well as emerging voices
from the Inland Empire. More than 80 writers are featured in the
collection. <br><br>
Lori Davis, director of the Gneiss Poetry Series, said she is excited
about introducing “Inlandia” to the Coachella Valley. <br><br>
“It has been an admirable undertaking on the part of Heyday Books to
collect and assemble these works, and this book is something they should
be very proud to present, she said. Fiction fans and everyone else
interested in local history and lore will surely enjoy the evening and
this relevant anthology,” she said. <br><br>
Fiction writers, poets and speakers scheduled to appear on Dec. 12
include Gayle Brandeis, Katherine Saubel, Alex Espinoza, E.J. Jones, Juan
Felipe Herrera, Lori Davis and Ruth Nolan. Gayle Wattawa, editor of
“Inlandia,” and Malcolm Margolin, publisher of the anthology, will also
appear. <br><br>
The readings are free and open to the public. A $5 donation is suggested.
