Under the artistic direction of Indonesian choreography Ery
Mefri, the West Sumatran-based company makes their West Coast
premiere with an intoxicating work that incorporates elements
of traditional martial arts—drawing on the Randai with
movements based on pencak silat (a self-defense art)—and
modern Western movement, while touching on current issues
faced by Minang society. <br>

The work's live soundscape is created by chants, claps and
body percussion of the performers, and also incorporated is
Tari Piring (Plate Dance), which originated as part of the
paddy harvest party and tests a performer's adroitness and
skill.<br>

Revered Indonesian choreographer Ery Mefri brings
his acclaimed company Nan Jombang to the U.S. for
the first time with an intoxicating work that
incorporates coiled bodies, exacting feats of
balance and spellbinding control—punctuated by
bursts of chanting, clapping and body percussion.<br>

mesmerizing play of a changing, fluid form</b>.”

“<b>A moving and profound evening of dance</b>. If
you can still get a ticket, do so.” —<i>Glam

Rooted in the spiritual and martial arts
traditions of West Sumatra’s Minangkabau ethnic
minority, the company—consisting entirely of
members of the Mefri family—incorporates elements
of modern Western movement, while touching on
current issues faced by Minang society. The
resulting dance drama, <i>Rantau Berbisik</i> (<i>Whisperings
of Exile</i>), resonantly enacts a time-honored
rite of passage: the bittersweet journeys of young
men who must leave their native villages to seek
fortune out in the wider world. In the
long-standing custom of this matrilineal society
where inheritance accrues to daughters, sons are
expected to leave home and earn the means
necessary to support a wife and children before
settling down. <br>
