The Royal Chicano Air Force (RCAF) is a Chicano/a arts and community-service organization that originated in 1969, in Sacramento, California, during the Chicano Movement. Most scholarly writings on the RCAF focus exclusively on the collective’s contributions
to Chicano/a visual art forms, mainly the silkscreen poster and murals. In “The Necessary Theater of the Royal Chicano Air Force and the Performance of Memory,” Dr. Diaz analyzes the form and function of the group’s air force persona over forty years. Locating
the RCAF’s early contributions to Chicano/a Theater, Dr. Diaz uses historical and theoretical paradigms in the Chicano/a and Latina/o Theater Arts, providing critical lenses for understanding the RCAF in the twenty-first century.<br>
<br>
Dr. Diaz holds a PhD in American Studies from the College of William and Mary. She presently teaches in The School of Interdisciplinary Studies at the San Francisco Art Institute. Her work is published in Imaginarte and Chicana/Latina Studies. She is also
director of the film, The Ancient Documentaries of Southside Park.<br>
