The Network is the product of a successful proposal to the UC Office of the President’s Multicampus Research Programs and Initiatives competition. UC Humanities Network funding opportunities range from individual faculty fellowships to multicampus research groups in the humanities, as well as continued funding from the UC California Studies Consortium.<br><br> In addition to these opportunities available through UCHRI, there are several opportunities connected to the Humanities Network that are available through your campus. Each UC campus has a humanities center that is at least partially funded with Network support. The centers are administering a competition for Multicampus Research Groups in the Humanities. The humanities deans are responsible for dissemination of graduate fellowship support funds.<br><br> We hope that you will look carefully at all current funding opportunities for the remainder of this year, or those that might make sense for you next year. We also encourage you to get involved with your local humanities center. Working Groups and Workshops will provide financial and technological resources for University of California faculty to support research collaboration and communication within the extended range of humanities disciplines.<br><br> <b>Working Groups<br> </b>Working Groups are designed to catalyze collaboration between individuals from different disciplines, locations, and campuses around a specific problem, theme, object or topic. A Working Group may consist of between 5 and 15 people who will collaborate over one academic year to address a clearly defined timely issue or early stage of research on an emergent topic in the humanities. Members of a Working Group will be expected to be connected virtually for ongoing communication and to meet face-to-face at least one time throughout the year.<br><br> <b>Working Groups Details<br> </b>Proposals should include the following:<br><br> (a) a project description that addresses in no more than 1250 words:<br><br> · the Working Group's problem statement <br><br> · the short-term and long-term significance of the topic or issue to the humanities<br><br> · the methods and approaches being adopted<br><br> (b) a list of Working Group participants and short rationale for their membership;<br><br> (c) a clearly stated set of deliverables, whether they be scholarly publication, technological prototype, an external grant proposal or application to the UC Humanities Initiative MRG program or to UCHRI for a residential group, a set of recommendations, or organizational intervention;<br><br> (d) an itemized budget and brief budget narrative. Proposed budgets may cover travel, lodging and per diem expenses for workshop meetings of working group members as well as necessary group related research expenses. Please note that budgets may be no more than $10,000. Funding to cover partial expenses for a graduate research assistant already affiliated with the institution of one Working Group member will be considered upon demonstration that the research of the group cannot be conducted without the GRA. A brief justification for the research assistant support should be included in the budget narrative. No more than fifty percent of requested funding can be devoted to GRA funding; and<br><br> (e) name of the principal lead who will coordinate, organize and monitor the progress of the working group. The PI will be responsible for submitting a research and budget report to UCHRI at the end of the grant period.<br><br> The deadline for submissions is <b>March 1, 2010</b>. All proposals should be submitted online via FastApps. Working Group grants will be for up to one year and are non-renewable. Applicants are encouraged to apply for MRG funding, but those receiving MRU funding from the UCMRPI or MRG funding from the Humanities Centers will be ineligible for Working Group funding.
