world. It is central to the lives of Southeast Asians, in lullabies, childhood
games, romance, proverbs, narratives, and songs.<br>
This talk traces its history and use in the past and present in </span></font></b><b><font
size=4 color=maroon><span style='font-size:13.5pt;color:maroon;font-weight:
bold'>Southeast Asia</span></font></b><b><font size=4 color=maroon><span
style='font-size:13.5pt;color:maroon;font-weight:bold'> and around the world. <br>

bold'>Muhammad Haji Salleh is a poet, critic and professor at the Universiti
Sains Malaysia, </span></font></b><b><font size=2><span style='font-size:10.0pt;

style='font-size:10.0pt;font-weight:bold'>. He has published several books of
criticism and poetry in Malay and English. His poetry works include <i><span
