bold'>, and is found in at least by 40 languages in the region and around the
world. It is central to the lives of Southeast Asians, in lullabies, childhood
games, romance, proverbs, narratives, and songs.<br>

Haji Salleh is a poet, critic and professor at the Universiti Sains Malaysia, </span></font></b><b><font

size=2><span style='font-size:10.0pt;font-weight:bold'>. He has published
several books of criticism and poetry in Malay and English. His poetry works
include <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Beyond the Archipelago, Rowing Down
Two Rivers,</span></i> and <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Meraih
Ruang/Reaching,</span></i> while his critical works include <i><span
style='font-style:italic'>Yang Empunya Ceritera: The Mind of the Malay Author,
Puitika Sastera Melayu,</span></i> and <i><span style='font-style:italic'>Romance
and Laughter in the Archipelago.</span></i> Muhammad is a national
laureate of Malaysia. He is at present an associate researcher at the
Harvard-Yenching Institute in Cambridge.<br>
