Since the break up of the Berlin wall, the ideology of normalization−a term used to describe nations that are in transition toward a certain defined norm−has been sweeping over Europe. Croatian curatorial collective, <b>What, How & for Whom</b>, has organized the film and video program, <b>Normalization</b>, to reference a set of unsolved traumas and discontents in former Yugoslavia, and to reveal false universalisms behind the process of normalization.<BR><BR>
<b>What, How & for Whom</b> formed in 1999 and is based in Zagreb, Croatia. Its members are curators Ivet Curlin, Ana Devic, Natasa Ilic and Sabina Sabolovic, and designer and publicist Dejan Krsic. The curators will be present to introduce the screening.<br><br>
Since its inception in 2004, Outpost has organized its programs in thematic and geographic two-year cycles. In 2007 and 2008, the focus is on socio-political transformation in Eastern Europe. This screening introduces Outpost's new program cycle.<BR><BR>

<b>Vlatko Gilic</b> and <b>Sanja Ivekovic</b> both started working with film and video in the 70s and are widely known internationally. <b>Sanja Ivekovic</b>, the first artist in communist Yugoslavia to take a clear feminist position, is included in MOCA´s exhibition, <b>WACK! Art and the Feminist Revolution</b>. Both artists´ works are politically engaged, but not in a "battle against the darkness of Communist totalitarianism," but, paradoxically, in a way that took socialist ideology more seriously than the cynical political elite ever did, fighting for complete self-realization of individuals and culture and against bureaucratic limitations. Presented will be two films by <b>Vlatko Gilic</b> including, <i>Love</i> (1973), which was nominated for a Golden Globe, and <i>In Continuo</i> (1971), nominated for an Oscar, and <b>Sanja Ivekovic´s</b> Personal Cuts from 1981.<BR><BR>
While artistic practices from the 70s (and 80s) were driven by a direct confrontation with ideologies of domination, younger artists are questioning the rapid march toward "normalization" and transition into neo-liberal heaven. <b>Jasmila Zbanic´s</b> short film, <i>Images from the Corner</i> (2003), speaks to the relationship between women and war trauma. Her feature film <i>Grbavica</i> which won the Golden bear at Berlin film festival in 2006 can be seen in US cinemas now. <b>Goran Devic´s</b> film, <i>Imported Crows</i> (2004), looks at the problematic relationship between his socialist heritage and the present social climate, which stimulates various types of exclusion, intolerance, and ethnic mythologies. The video <i>Scene for a New Heritage</i> (2004) by <b>David Maljkovic</b> is a fictive story about collective amnesia and the question of heritage. And the video <i>Magical World</i> by Swedish artist <b>Johanna Billing</b> was recorded in Zagreb in 2005 and may be understood as a metaphor about the ghost geography of Eastern Europe, threatened by the pressure to adapt its own culture to that of the "normal" European standards of the West. <BR>

WHW curator, Ana Devic, will be in residency in March 2007 at 18th Street Arts Center, Southern California´s largest contemporary art and artist residency center, providing support to emerging to mid-career artists and arts organizations dedicated to issues of community, diversity, and social justice in contemporary society.<br><br>
The current exhibition at LACE, through April 8, 2007, is <i>Shared Women</i>, curated by Eve Fowler, Emily Roysdon and A.L. Steiner. <i>Shared Women</i> champions a dynamic group of queer feminist artists that explore the broader issues of generational politics, alternative economies and mutual attraction. <br><br>
