<H1 class="style31 style33" align=center><FONT size=6>Making Streets Safe
for Pedestrians</FONT></H1>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Neglect for pedestrian safety in
the design and use of American streets has resulted in an estimated 47,700
pedestrian deaths in the U.S. during the decade from 2000 to 2009,
according to a study by Transportation for America, a national coalition
working on transportation reform.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>In the same decade, more than
688,000 pedestrians were injured, equivalent to a pedestrian being struck
every seven minutes, according to the study,<EM> “Dangerous by Design
2011.” </EM></FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>While a number of Florida
communities were ranked highest based on the coalition's Pedestrian Danger
Index,<STRONG><EM> the Riverside-San Bernardino-Ontario</EM></STRONG>
region ranked 5th in the nation in the study.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Despite the national data, little
attention or public resources have been committed to reduce pedestrian
death and injuries in the U.S., according to the coalition.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2><STRONG>Ryan Wiggins,</STRONG>
Southern California Organizer for Transportation for America, will talk
about the report’s findings and methodology, examine why Inland southern
California rates so poorly, and focus on what makes streets unsafe at the
Thursday, June 16 Randall Lewis Seminar Series. The seminar will begin at
5:30 p.m. in Conference Room C, UCR Extension Building, 1200 University
Ave., Riverside.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Mr. Wiggins also will discuss what
the federal policy is now in relation to pedestrian and bicycle
investments, what is being done to improve the safety of our streets, and
how those interested can help.</FONT></P>
<P class=style35 align=center><FONT size=2>About the Speaker</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Ryan Wiggins is the Southern
California Organizer for Transportation for America, a national coalition
of more than 600 organizations, elected officials, agencies, businesses
and labor groups focused on reforming the federal transportation policy to
invest in a multi-modal 21st century transportation system that promotes
economic development, improves public health and reduces oil
dependency.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Mr. Wiggins has dual Master’s
degrees in International Environmental Policy and Natural Resources and
Sustainable Development from American University in Washington, D.C., and
the United Nations mandated University for Peace in Costa Rica. He also is
a U.S. Navy veteran.</FONT></P>

<H2 class=style13 align=center>About Randall Lewis </H2>
<P class=style8 align=left><IMG hspace=3 alt="Randall Lewis" vspace=2
align=right src="Images/RandallLewis.jpg" width=100 height=169>Randall
Lewis is well known for his innovative approaches to planning, designing,
and marketing residential communities as Executive Vice President of the
Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies. </P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He has been Secretary of the Los Angeles County
Citizens Planning Council, Director of the Home Builder's Council,
National Director of the National Association of Home Builders, and
President of the Inland Empire Arts Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He was inducted into the California Building
Industry Association Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Sales and
Marketing Council's MAME Awards Marketing Person of the Year. He is a long
time ULI member as well as a Governor of the ULI Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He serves on several executive boards,
including the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and the UCLA
School of Public Policy and Social Research.He received his B.A. from
Claremont McKenna College. </P>
