<H2 align=center><SPAN class=style37>How did it happen?<BR>How bad is
it?<BR>What to do about it?</SPAN></H2></SPAN>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>California is in crisis.The image
of the Golden State as the place for entrepreneurial,
invent-what-you-can-imagine-and-grow-rich-from-it-capitalism has been
tarnished.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>The once flourishing housing
market is wallowing in foreclosures; past tax cuts and the Great Recession
slashed state revenues; and efforts to ignite economic growth through
green industry, biotechnology and genomics have been disappointing.
California remains mired with a budget deficit of nearly $26 billion and
unemployment of 12 percent.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2><STRONG>Gary A. Dymski</STRONG>,
Professor of Economics at UCR, will trace the recent boom/bust history of
California’s economy, how it recovered in the past only to slide once
again, and what lies ahead for the state at the Tuesday, May 17 Randall
Lewis Seminar Series. The seminar will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Conference
Room B, UCR Extension Building, 1200 University Ave.,
Riverside.</FONT></P>
<H5 class=style9 align=center><FONT size=2>About the speaker</FONT></H5>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Professor Dymski came to UCR as
Assistant Professor of Economics in 1991 and became Professor of Economics
in 2001. In 2003, Professor Dymski also oversaw the planning phase of
UCR's Center for Sustainable Suburban Development, serving as its first
director.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Dr. Dymski was on academic leave
from 2003 to 2009, when he served as Executive Director of University of
California Center in Sacramento, a center established to provide UC
undergraduate students hands-on experience in government, business or
nonprofit organizations. The center also represented University of
California academic activities in the state capitol.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Before joining UCR, Dr. Dymski was
an Assistant Professor of Economics at USC. He has also been a Visiting
Professor or Scholar at universities in Brazil, the United Kingdom, Greece
and Japan. His non-academic experience includes Staff Director and Fiscal
Advisor, Democratic Caucus of the Indiana State Senate; an Economic
Analyst for Legal Services Organization of Indiana and a Senior Research
Analyst with the Office of Institutional Research, Syracuse
University.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>Professor Dymski earned a
Bachelor’s degree in Urban Studies from the University of Pennsylvania;
Masters degree in Public Budgeting from Syracuse University, and Master’s
and Ph.D. degrees in Economics from the University of Massachusetts,
Amherst.</FONT></P>
<P class=style9 align=left><FONT size=2>He is the author of <EM>The Bank
Merger Wave</EM> (M.E. Sharpe, 1999), and four co-edited volumes,
including<EM> Reimagining Growth: Toward a Renewal of the Idea of
Development,</EM> co-edited with Silvana DePaula (Zed, 2005). He has
published more than 100 articles and chapters on banking, financial
fragility, urban development, credit-market discrimination, the Latin
American and Asian financial crises, economic exploitation, and housing
finance.</FONT></P>

<H2 class=style13 align=center>About Randall Lewis </H2>
<P class=style8 align=left><IMG hspace=3 alt="Randall Lewis" vspace=2
align=right src="Images/RandallLewis.jpg" width=100 height=169>Randall
Lewis is well known for his innovative approaches to planning, designing,
and marketing residential communities as Executive Vice President of the
Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies. </P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He has been Secretary of the Los Angeles County
Citizens Planning Council, Director of the Home Builder's Council,
National Director of the National Association of Home Builders, and
President of the Inland Empire Arts Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He was inducted into the California Building
Industry Association Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Sales and
Marketing Council's MAME Awards Marketing Person of the Year. He is a long
time ULI member as well as a Governor of the ULI Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He serves on several executive boards,
including the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and the UCLA
School of Public Policy and Social Research.He received his B.A. from
Claremont McKenna College. </P>
