<p align="left" class="style9">Singapore, the world’s only sovereign city-state, has three striking characteristics, says <strong>Alan Altshuler,</strong> Distinguished Service Professor and the Ruth and Frank Stanton Professor of Urban Policy and Planning at Harvard University.</p>
<p align="left" class="style9"> It has been a one-party authoritarian state since achieving independence in 1965, but is also one of the best governed nations in the world by most measures, including governmental competence and honesty and beneficial outcomes for its citizens, Dr. Altshuler says.</p>
<p align="left" class="style9"> Secondly, Singapore’s economic growth rate and improvements in public health, in particular, have been the greatest of any country in the world over this period, bringing it to rough parity with the U.S. from third-world conditions at the time of independence.</p>
<p align="left" class="style9"> Thirdly, Singapore is committed to comprehensive urban planning in ways virtually unimaginable in the United States, and is widely viewed as the best planned metropolis in the world. </p>
<p align="left" class="style9">Dr. Altshuler will elaborate on these characteristics, examine prospects for regime liberalization, discuss the international influence of Singapore’s successful strategies, and consider what Americans may be able to learn from the Singapore experience at the <strong>Monday, Jan. 10 Randall Lewis Seminar Series.</strong> The free seminar will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room B, UCR Extension Building, 1200 University Avenue in Riverside.</p>
<p align="left" class="style9"> Dr. Altshuler holds joint appointments at Harvard in the Kennedy School of Government and the Graduate School of Design. He also has served as Harvard's Dean of the Graduate School of Design, Academic Dean of the Kennedy School and as the founding Director of the Kennedy School’s A. Alfred Taubman Center for State and Local Government. </p>
<p align="left" class="style9">He also has been a visiting professor at the National University of Singapore’s School of Public Policy for two months in each of the past three years.</p>
<p align="left" class="style9"> Prior to his posts at Harvard, Dr. Altshuler taught at Cornell University, MIT, and New York University, including posts as head of MIT’s Political Science Department and Dean of NYU’s Graduate School of Public Administration (now the Wagner School of Public Service). He took a leave from MIT from 1971 to 1974 to serve as Massachusett’s first Secretary of Transportation and Construction.</p>

</h2>
<p align="left" class="style8"><img src="http://cssd.ucr.edu/Images/RandallLewis.jpg" alt="Randall Lewis" width="100" height="169" hspace="3" vspace="2" align="right">Randall Lewis is well known for his innovative approaches to planning, designing, and marketing residential communities as Executive Vice President of the Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies. </p>
<p align="left" class="style8">He has been Secretary of the Los Angeles County Citizens Planning Council, Director of the Home Builder's Council, National Director of the National Association of Home Builders, and President of the Inland Empire Arts Foundation.</p>
<p align="left" class="style8"> He was inducted into the California Building Industry Association Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Sales and Marketing Council's MAME Awards Marketing Person of the Year.
He is a long time ULI member as well as a Governor of the ULI Foundation.</p>
<p align="left" class="style8"> He serves on several executive boards, including the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and the UCLA School of Public Policy and Social Research.He received his B.A. from Claremont McKenna College. </p>
