<P class=style9>With an unemployment rate of more than 14%, the inland
Southern California region has been one of the regions hardest hit by the
Great Recession of 2008-09. It has also been the epicenter of the housing
foreclosure crisis.</P>
<P class=style9>Anil Deolalikar, Professor of Economics and Director of
the Center for Sustainable Suburban Development at UCR, will discuss why
the Inland Empire has suffered much more than the rest of the state or the
country at the February 18 Randall Lewis Seminar Series.</P>
<P class=style9>The seminar will be held at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room
B., UCR Extension Building, 1200University Avenue. See <A

<P class=style9>Professor Deolalikar, who also is Associate Dean of the
College of Humanities, Arts and Social Sciences at UCR, will examine the
prospects for income growth and job recovery in the region, especially in
light of longer-term economic, social and demographic trends.</P></DIV></TD>

<P class=style8 align=left><IMG hspace=3 alt="Randall Lewis" vspace=2

height=169>Randall Lewis is well known for his innovative approaches to
planning, designing, and marketing residential communities as Executive
Vice President of the Upland-based Lewis Group of Companies. </P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He has been Secretary of the Los Angeles County
Citizens Planning Council, Director of the Home Builder's Council,
National Director of the National Association of Home Builders, and
President of the Inland Empire Arts Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He was inducted into the California Building
Industry Association Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the Sales and
Marketing Council's MAME Awards Marketing Person of the Year. He is a long
time ULI member as well as a Governor of the ULI Foundation.</P>
<P class=style8 align=left>He serves on several executive boards,
including the USC School of Policy, Planning and Development and the UCLA
School of Public Policy and Social Research.He received his B.A. from
Claremont McKenna College.

<P class=style9 align=left>Dr. Deolalikar has been a Professor of
Economics at UCR since 2002. He previously was a Professor of Economics
and of International Studies at the University of Washington – Seattle,
Assistant Professor of Economics at the University of Pennsylvania, and
Visiting Assistant Professor at Harvard University. He also has held
visiting appointments at the World Bank.</P>
<P class=style9 align=left>He earned a Bachelor’s degree summa cum laude
in Economics at Harvard University in 1977, a diploma in Economics from
Cambridge University (U.K.) in 1978 and a Ph.D. in Economics at Stanford
University in 1981. He also was a postdoctoral research fellow in economic
demography at Yale University in 1980-81.</P>
<P class=style9 align=left>Dr. Deolalikar also serves as director of the
CHASS Public Policy Initiative that launched plans for establishing a
School of Public Policy at UCR. The proposed professional school, approved
by the UC Regents in September 2008, plans to conduct research and train
future policy-makers in a range of social-policy issues, including those
related to population growth, environmental policy and immigration. </P>
