be a challenge across the nation, in California and in the Inland region.
In addition to the usual seasonal influenza, the first full season of H1N1
pandemic influenza – better known as the Swine Flu – is rapidly
approaching.

Marie Weller is a Public Health Nurse V
who has worked in the area of Pandemic Influenza planning and response for
the past four years with the Riverside County Community Health Agency,
Department of Public Health. She will discuss at the Oct.
15 Randall Lewis Seminar Series what can be done to help prevent
contracting the influenzas, provide details on planned vaccines, and offer
tips for businesses and organizations worried about a significant number
of employees unable to work because of influenza. The seminar will be held
at 5:30 p.m. in Conference Room B, UCR EXtension Building, 1200
University Ave. in Riverside (See <A

Of most concern and gaining considerable attention
is the H1N1 influenza. Concerns about H1N1 began in April 2009, when an
outbreak in Mexico later spread to the U.S. In
June, the World Health Organization raised the H1N1 flu to a “pandemic”
level.

While seasonal flu is of most concern for infants
and those 65 and older, the H1N1 influenza is more likely in those aged
six months to 24. Other high risk groups for H1N1 include pregnant women
and those under 64 with chronic diseases such as asthma or heart
problems.

Ms. Weller will discuss the agency’s plans in
working closely with local school officials and childcare centers to
ensure that school-age children receive the H1N1 vaccine. The agency also
is working closely with the medical community, community clinics, health
insurers, physician groups, hospitals and medical volunteers on
vaccination plans.
