The nation's decades-long
addiction to consumption is slowing, as the deep recession forces
consumers to question the true necessity of many purchases.

A slowdown in U.S. consumption may be a good model for
Brazil, India, China and other nations, whose growing affluence is
beginning to spawn U.S. consumption practices, says James M. Lents,
President of the International Sustainable Systems Research Center and
former Director of UCR's Center for Sustainable Suburban Development.

Dr. Lents will speak on growing world consumption and its
consequences at the Jan. 22 Randall Lewis Seminar Series.

If some of the most populous countries in the world adopt
current U.S. per capita consumption practices, it could devastate the
earth's resources and significantly boost waste and pollution, Dr. Lents
says.

Dr. Lents has been involved in environmental and energy
research at UCR for eight years. His research involves air quality
management policy, the impact of electricity generation policy, and
impacts on micro, macro and global environmental systems.

He has served as Executive Officer of the South Coast Air
Quality Management District, Director of the Colorado Air Pollution
Control Division, and Technical Director of the Chattanooga-Hamilton
County Air Pollution Control Bureau.

He was significantly involved in the development of the
1990 U.S. Clean Air Act and the 1988 California Clean Air Act, and has
served on four national commissions reviewing diesel standards,
alternative fuels, automobile global warming emissions, air quality
management processes and the recent National Academy of Science review of
the U.S. air quality management system.
