This program is run by Cal Poly San Luis Obispo on behalf of the California State University system in partnership with the US Department of Energy, NASA, NOAA, and NSF. This program places pre-service science and math teachers in paid summer research experiences
at national laboratory facilities in California, Colorado, and Washington.<span class="xapple-converted-space"> </span></span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;font-family:"Times New Roman","serif";color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>

This unique opportunity is specifically for students who are committed to pursuing a career as a science or mathematics teacher (i.e., currently a pre-service teacher).
<span style="background:yellow;mso-highlight:yellow">If you are of at least Junior standing, have a strong background in science, mathematics, and/or engineering and have been awarded a Noyce Scholarship, you are eligible.</span><span class="xapple-converted-space"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u><span style="color:black">The Experience</span></u><span style="color:black"><br>
The central goal of the STAR program is to provide aspiring and early career science and mathematics teachers with the opportunity to engage in paid summer experiences involving laboratory research. STAR fellows will spend 9 weeks participating on research
teams at a federal laboratory or research center. The research experience is integrated with weekly science teaching and education workshops to build and enhance teaching skills, career achievement and community building among STAR fellows, researchers, and
faculty. STAR Fellows share their research and research-connected lesson plans with their colleagues at a closing conference involving all STAR participants.<span class="xapple-converted-space"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></p>

<p class="MsoNormal"><u><span style="color:black">Compensation</span></u><span style="color:black"><o:p></o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="color:black">STAR fellows will be paid a<span class="xapple-converted-space"> </span><strong><span style="font-family:"Calibri","sans-serif"">$4,500</span></strong><span class="xapple-converted-space"> </span>stipend for the
9-week program commitment. Housing costs, if needed, and some travel will also be supported.<o:p></o:p></span></p>
