The underrepresentation of African Americans in higher education is a

stubbornly persistent problem. Much of what we know about the status of

African Americans in the American educational system is gained by

understanding the factors that facilitate or restrict student progress in

the academic pipeline. Changes currently underway in California signal

ongoing challenges for African American youth to gain access and success

in California higher education. Using data from the California

Postsecondary Education Commission (CPEC) and the California Department

of Education (CDE), we describe patterns and trends and share findings

regarding academic preparation at the<br>

secondary level, undergraduate and graduate enrollment, undergraduate and

graduate degree completion, and participation in the teaching

profession.<br><br>
