Hi folks,<br><br>I've been asked for a little more information on what would be involved in being the Admissions Committee representative, so I asked Wendy to elaborate a bit. Here is what she said: <br><br>"As I envision it, the student would be a full, voting member of the Admissions<br>
Committee, except that his/her participation would be restricted to<br>
recruitment-related issues, not admissions. Within the realm of recruitment, I<br>
expect the student to have quite a bit of influence. As you know, I'm really<br>
trying to beef up our recruitment efforts, and I highly value input from grad<br>
students, which is why I did the survey.<br>

I would like the student representative to be highly involved in planning<br>
recruitment strategies and recruitment weekend in general, and to have primary<br>
responsibility for organizing Gradfest. To this end, he/she might want to<br>
organize a separate grad student committee; I don't think this necessarily has<br>
to be a one-person job. Based on responses to the student survey, I think<br>
recruitment weekend should also include a social event (Friday-night dinner,<br>
perhaps) for the current and prospective students, without the faculty present;<br>
the student representative would also have responsibility for organizing this (or<br>
delegating it to someone else, as they see fit). Of course, the rest of the<br>

advanced to candidacy, is in good academic standing, and is willing to

Gardens). He or she would not, however, be involved in reviewing
applicants' files."<br><br></div>Recruiting good graduate students, as I'm sure you guys are aware, is vital for the reputation of our program, so it benefits all of us to see that recruitment is well done, and, because we've all looked for graduate programs recently, we have insights about what students are looking for that should be valuable to the committee. In addition, our representative on this committee can help to make sure the recruitment process is honest and transparent, which should also be to the benefit of the program, and is something that we may be better equipped to think about than the faculty are, because we have a better idea of what new students may be expecting and what sorts of things may come as surprises to them.<br>
<br>So, I hope that many of you will be interested in this position. If you have advanced to candidacy and might be interested in doing this, please send me an email. Just so you know, the student we nominate will need to be approved by the faculty on the Admissions Committee.<br>
